The
227th Convention of the Diocese of New Jersey was held
on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Scottish Rite Auditorium
in Collingswood, New Jersey. The Convention Eucharist
and Bishop's address took
place the night before at Trinity Cathedral in Trenton.
Report
by CFO Canon Phyllis Jones on the collections for
Haiti and New Zealand at the Cathedral Friday
night and at the Convention itself on Saturday:
From
the vision of the Diocese of New Jersey: “Together,
we are a missionary community, celebrating the abundant
life of Christ (John 10:10) and sharing that life
with the world that God so loves (John 3:16). Our
vision is to build up the Body of Christ and reach
out to the world in Christ’s name. . .”
Sound familiar? At our Diocesan Convention last week,
we reaffirmed in many ways that vision we share. Among
them, we put our money where our mouth is.
We were asked to share our abundance with our devastated
brothers and sisters In Haiti, and we responded by offering
$5,351 at our Convention Eucharist. We have since confirmed
with the Episcopal Church Foundation that their matching
funds program will double that amount. That’s $10.702,
or 424,155 Haitian Gourde, that will go towards (re)building
up the Body of Christ and reaching out in His name to
restore hope.
When we were asked the very next day to remember and
assist those who are struggling to recover from the recent
earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand we once again
responded, with a collection of $5,018 (NZ $6,784) to
send towards those relief and recovery efforts. These
are the kinds of wonderful things that happen when we
as a Diocese live into our vision and our identity as
a missionary community.
Thank you to those of you who contributed so generously.
To those of you who may still want to, please consider
organizing a collection within your congregation, as
several of our congregations have already done. The matching
funds program for Haiti continues, and our Finance Office
will be happy to assist in making sure your donations
are properly directed to take advantage of it, should
you so desire. Please contact CFO Canon Phyllis Jones
